Shigeru Ban's architecture firm has always been known for his instant cardboard architecture in times of natural disaster and crisis situation. With all the displaced families seeking shelter in school gyms, shelter, food and water is currently Japan's main needs.

 

Temporary shelter made out of paper tubes and cardboard in gymnasium to offer distressed families privacy.

 

From temporary shelter to actual schools made out of  recycled paper cardboard tubes, Ban's team has been putting together these types of structures for over a decade. Paper cardboard tubes has a good structural quality, widely available, and comes in various weight and sizes, quick to assemble and disassemble and reused for rebuilding. Ban's innovative efforts have demonstrated to be effective after earthquakes in Turkey, China and Kobe.
